Sandy Tan Designs Spaces Showcase Personality And Memories

Sandy Tan, founder of Chalked design studio, has a unique office space lined with an eclectic mix of limited edition Bearbrick toys, striking art pieces, and personal mementos. These items hold special meaning for Tan, who is an avid collector of Bearbrick toys and a fan of their minimalist, bear-shaped design. Among her prized possessions are four figures from a series by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, known for his distinctive style.

Tan’s office reflects her approach to designing spaces, where personal collections play an important role in tying together the overall design. She believes that a space should feel warm, welcoming, and personal, with an intuitive layout that encourages conversation and movement. To achieve this, she incorporates warm lighting and comfortable materials into her designs.

The convenience of living at Parktown Residence is set to be elevated with the upcoming Tampines North MRT Station on the Cross Island Line (CRL) and the integrated bus interchange. With seamless connectivity, residents will have easy access to the various shopping malls in Tampines as well as other parts of Singapore, making Parktown Residence the perfect choice for those looking for a vibrant and convenient urban lifestyle. Located right at the heart of it all, Parktown Residence offers unmatched accessibility for its residents.

As the founder of Chalked, Tan has made a name for herself and her design studio by working on a wide range of projects for close to two decades. These projects have included private homes for ultra-wealthy clients, as well as show suites and galleries for residential and commercial developments. This year, she was invited to be a judge for the EdgeProp Excellence Awards 2025, marking her second year on the panel of esteemed industry experts.

Chalked is a highly sought-after design studio in Singapore, with clients including City Developments (CDL), GuocoLand, and UOL Group. The studio is known for their work on sales galleries for new projects, and recently collaborated with CapitaLand on the sales gallery and show suites for their latest development, LyndenWoods. The challenge was to design the show suites in a way that showcased how each space could meet the needs of potential buyers. The result was a successful and appealing design that catered to a wide range of buyers.

Tan notes that in recent years, more developers and homeowners have engaged Chalked to design and furnish vacant units in completed projects, to help sell or lease them. These units are often in ultra-luxury projects, such as Nouvel 18, Gramercy Park, New Futura, and South Beach Residences. When working on these projects, Tan ensures that the materials and furnishings selected are not only visually appealing, but also durable and easy to maintain.

While Chalked has taken on a few international projects in China and India, Tan’s focus remains on maintaining a boutique, personalized approach in their home market of Singapore. She believes that Singapore’s high-net-worth segment offers a valuable avenue for the growth of their studio. As such, Tan has kept her team small with only six members in Singapore, but has expanded the studio’s operations by establishing two-person teams in Johor, Malaysia and Manila, Philippines.

In recent years, Tan has noticed a shift in homeowners’ design preferences, with a growing trend towards minimalist luxury in furniture and finishes. She predicts that this trend will continue to gain popularity over the next few years. Despite the potential for growth in international markets, Tan remains dedicated to providing personalized and high-quality designs for the high-net-worth segment in Singapore.
